For the fifth year in a row, Bhaktivedanta College is running a four-month Bhakti-sastri course for devotees eager to deepen their sastric knowledge. The course started in January and will end in mid-May. The curriculum is the four scriptures that Srila Prabhupada considered most important for understanding Krishna conscious philosophy: Bhagavad-gita, Sri Isopanisad, The Nectar of Instruction and The Nectar of Devotion.
Srila Prabhupada personally established Bhakti-sastri seminars to ensure that his followers acquire sufficient knowledge and spiritual strength to preach Krishna ocnsciousness in an authorized and accessible manner. Moreover, he felt that most of the difficulties arising in the practice of spiritual life could be destroyed by careful study of the scriptures. Thus strengthening and training devotees in scriptural knowledge establishes their deeper and stronger Krishna consciousness. This benefits the devotees, ISKCON, and society at large.
“. . . you have to understand by studying carefully the philosophy. We have got so many books now, and I want all of my disciples to read them carefully. Soon we shall be instituting Bhakti-sastri examinations and all brahmanas will have to pass. So utilize whatever time you find to make a thorough study of my books.” (Letter from Srila Prabhupada, 7th July 1976)
Bhakta Nicos: “It’s an intense course of study for those who want to appreciate Vaishnavism more in their lives.”
Bhaktin Susan: “Bhakti-sastri is without doubt reinforcing my faith, cleansing my heart, clearing up my mind, and giving me strength to follow this path. Thanks, Krishna, for giving me such a privilege.”
Aksara Dasa: “Atah sri-krishna-namadi na bhaved grahyam indriyaih. Krishna is not perceivable by our material senses. We have to see Him and His energies through the eyes of sastra. That’s why devotees are gathering here.
